Porn!

Pornography and relationships

Pornography. An evil and wretched device that is simultaneously one of the most popular forms of media we have ever created. It caters to every fantasy a person could have, no matter how obscure or despicable: it exists somewhere in the ether of the internet.

Imagine, when you were young, your intimate, passionate thoughts were gated only by your mind. Unless you were lucky enough to find a willing partner, or maybe it’s your birthday, and your wife has had a bottle of wine, you would never know the tangible reality of your most carnal desires.

Enter porn.

The first website created exclusively for pornography — appropriately named Sex.com — found its genesis in 1996. Following this, there is cataclysmic growth in the sex industry. Every day in the United States, 37 new pornographic films are produced and published online. And perhaps more staggering is the fact that 25% of all search queries generated daily are porn-related. The universal popularity of porn and its elevation to ubiquitousness is rivaled only by electricity and the internet.

While a case could be made that this exposure to sex is liberating and the overwhelming presence of sex online is a symbol of our unrestricted freedom and creativity, porn is also a blight that affects normal psychosexual development and poisons otherwise healthy relationships.

Porn has been, and always will be, a good predictor of infidelity and marital problems. In 2010, the National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families (NCPCF) found that 47% of American families reported that pornography is a recurring problem. In tandem with this, porn usage increases the probability of infidelity by 300%.

There is no surer way of reducing your overall relationship satisfaction.

One common symptom of excessive porn usage is a general dissatisfaction with normal sexual encounters. As mentioned prior, there is an extreme abundance of porn: nearly every possible scenario has been captured and distributed. Any fantasies you might have are available for your consumption at the click of a button. If that is the case, then why would you be satisfied having sex with a partner who may not be willing or able to fulfill your fantasies?
