In the way your arms and legs curl over your body like a new leaf on a stem

When you sleep

In the way her black fur stands up, bristling and ready

When she warns

In the way the sudden clunking and thunking up there startles us

When they flutter

In the way the green rockets up and strangles the yard

When it rains

In the way the music blares and warbles late at night

When they party

In the way the air conditioner shudders and rumbles, that ominous clanking

When it runs

In the way an insistent claw snags on the fabric of my skirt

When he begs

In the way the pomegranates swell and bend their branches

When they grow

In the way his tail whips back and forth, frantic ecstasy

When we come home
