5 Wonderful Things You Can Do when You Learn How to Draw

Drawing is a wonderful hobby that I have found not long ago, and for a not-so-marvelous reason — just to stop sucking at it. But I have learned to love it as a hobby, and now I want to help you get a glimpse at how wonderful it is to create something, something cool, from nothing.

Sounds stupid, doesn’t it? But think about it, why is it so hard to put a pen or a pencil to paper and just draw some shits? Because it feels bad when you create something that looks bad. Same thing was for me, I hesitated because I didn’t want to embarrass myself. I mean, who wants to make ugly drawings? I have to tell you this: While all the things you see online are so polished, beautiful, spotless, they hide behind all the messy parts of the process.

If you learn to draw loosely and quickly, your drawings may not look like a masterpiece, yet, but they are expressive, and that’s what makes them unique, because YOU made it. It is YOU who express your mind on the paper. Pick up your pen or pencil, record all your feelings, your impressions, get over the fear of bad looking drawings, and the masterpiece will come to you.

When you learn to draw, observation is a part of it. At first, it may feel weir and uncomfortable to go out with a sketchbook and start drawing random people. I know, I’ve been there. So here’s what I did: I looked at things and people, selecting the parts that I want to study. Then I started drawing in my head the form, the contour, the values, perspective… Then I went home, where it feels safe, and start putting it down. It might be slow, but it also is a good exercise to draw from memory.

Proportions, oh proportions, learn the standard, the rules, then learn to forget it. Once you have learned the proportions of something, nothing can stop you from manipulating separate aspect of a normal thing, and turn it into some abnormal looking thing without loosing the believability. Also, breed humans with animals or fruits or flowers, whatever that you want to do. It is your own world in your hands.

As with any learned skills, if you stick to it for long enough, then look back at your past works and compare them to the current ones, you will notice changes, improvements, and man does it feel good. Just don’t sleep on it. Always aim to improve, no amount of improvements is enough. Then go back once in a while and enjoy!

Complex, highly detailed objects, such as motorbikes, human faces, hands, can be come so much more draw-able with the help of your third eye of the artist. By breaking things down to their basic forms and shapes, you can get the foundation down in a matter of seconds or minutes. And you don’t always have to draw exactly what you see. Capture the moment first, then search for reference and bring together different parts to create some thing new. And yes, artists use reference, all the time, just more flexible and creative.

There we go, are you intrigued yet? Then why don’t you just go for it?
