“I need you to do the laundry after work today.” Darleen said.

“I can’t, I have a project I need to work on.”

“Thanks, I’m going out with some friends and won’t be home ’til late.” Darleen said.

“No, I can’t, I have to get this done.”

Darleen left the room without another word. They watched her go. She was a tall woman, conventionally attractive. Today she was wearing a dark blue skirt and white blouse. Her heels clicked on the tile floor. The door shut firmly behind her. Then, the heard the car start and watched through the window as it back out of the driveway and drove away.

“I can’t…” They muttered to themselves as they finished their breakfast. There was a lingering smell of perfume in the air and a welcomed silence. The clock on the stove read 7:30. They had to get going too or they would be late for work. Grabbing the laundry soap and basket, they headed to the car, mentally preparing for the day ahead and debating in their mind the priorities. I’ll take it, just in case I have time, they thought. Then, I don’t have time. Then, Maybe I can work on my thing tomorrow.

It was a familiar debate, and they knew how it ended, how it always ended. They would do the laundry. Their project would get pushed off again, and quite probably again. This was life.

They pulled out onto the street and began the morning trudge. The car was a faded blue Honda civic, and older one. Nondescript, unimpressive. The interior was beige and had a faint smell of stale potato chips, mildew, and spilled soda.

At the first intersection, a car blew a stop sign and nearly hit them. They stopped in time, but the other car never noticed them. At the next intersection a car cut them off. They looked in their rear view, they were the only car on the road. They came to a red light. Their stop was followed by a sudden thud.

“What the hell?”

They got out of the car.

The light turned green and the car behind them drove around them and sped away.

Their rear bumper was scuffed, but not seriously damaged. They got back into their car and continued.
