NIGERIA IS MURDERING ITS CITIZENS IN COLD BLOOD

I am in shock literally, I feel like I am hallucinating and maybe all this is a simulation that I’d wake up from . It really feels like I am watching my favorite genre of movie which is action, you know all those ones were the government is waging war on its citizens then there’s a special secret service to save the day , those kind of movies precisely.

I find myself thinking about how the protests for the scrapping of the Special Anti Robbery Squad(SARS) unit of the police started but I can’t remember exactly what triggered it , a lot has happened between the space of the the beginning of the protests and now. But from nowhere it kicked off and my goodness people came out in their numbers because almost everyone either had a bad experience or had a family or friend that had such experiences or both.

The SARS unit are supposed to be an anti robbery unit but they are the main robbers and this is putting it lightly, they steal , kill , destroy , rape and kidnap. They arrest almost people of all ages but target the youths whether Nigerians or not for using something as basic as an iPhone or looking good generally, it’s the most pathetic shit and if you don’t settle or bribe them , they’d take you to their station and your family and friends may never hear from you again literally. They even kill and sell your body parts to ritualists , they kill for fun without a single regard for human life . It is crazy to think about.

Protests have been going on in various states nationwide and even Nigerians in diaspora have been protesting in their various embassies. To say I can’t believe the cooperation of Nigerians on this would be an understatement, I am shocked and impressed and at the same time heartbroken because here we are bonding over oppression from people that are supposed to protect us.

The whole organization from food , security , entertainment and the medical and legal aspect of it were all done to the letter by volunteers . This is more credibility than I have seen from the federal government in my short life on earth.

Despite the protests against police brutality, the police were still killing and harassing peaceful protesters. In our own eyes , some protesters were going to be framed and taken to courts for crimes that never happened.

At some point , I don’t know if it’s to placate us or get us off the streets, the Inspector General of Police said that the SARS has been scrapped . Honestly I thought this was victory at last but I was a gullible fool for thinking he was an honorable man because apparently they’ve been scrapping it for the past 4–5 years. Even despite the audio scrapping, these SARS officers were still wrecking havoc in the country.

Days later , we saw a bunch of videos of the government hiring thugs to harass protesters, scratch that , we saw policemen shooting tear gas and water cannons at peaceful protesters in the country’s capital .

The government were so committed to frustrate the efforts of protesters rather than do the right thing? E dey burst my brain.

On 20th October 2020, the Lagos state governor announced a curfew that was supposed to start by 4pm by few minutes to 12pm , if you know how jam packed Lagos is on a normal day, it’ll have to take the intervention of the avengers to even make that feasible but here we are with a government that doesn’t care.

Evening came and I saw videos of protesters holding the national flag and singing the anthem while sitting down on the road, my heart was in my throat because this is what bravery looks like and this country doesn’t deserve these heroes. Darkness came and we saw live videos of the Nigerian Army shooting live bullets at protesters. Live bullets? Not rubber bullets? Or at least tear gas ?.

Bodies were dropping whilst holding the national flag and the white on it stained with the blood of civilians that the military swore to protect .

Moving on to the next day , the police officers were killing random people moving on the streets? One would expect remorse from the government but we saw videos of dead bodies that mothers and siblings were crying over.

Na country be this ? Is this democracy? Are we in a military regime? We are definitely living in a jungle!

I’ve always known that Nigeria was bad and corrupt but I didn’t know it was this terrible and deeply rooted , e be like film trick.

I am numb, heartbroken and dumbfounded. I find myself in tears and thinking about how these government officials will rather kill its youth than scrap a rogue police unit. We are not asking for food , health care , education or anything that we are entitled to, we just wanna live and not be killed? You’d rather cut off the destinies of Nigerian youth than solve this little problem while we swim in the pool of other problems?

I find myself wondering about what Nigeria had ever given me as a citizen, NOT A SINGLE THING!. These few weeks have made me realize that I love my country but my country has never loved me, NEVER EVER.

I think about the fact that I am in my early twenties but these past few days , I am coming to the point of accepting death if it comes because it could be me or anyone stray bullets hits or I could be gunned down randomly and disposed without any closure for family members and friends. No I am not being dramatic, we have seen these things happen in our eyes for the past few days.

But how do we move on from this ? Are the dead going to get justice so at least their families can get closure? Or will things go back to normal without any accountability?

Presently , we have the PR of the government officials working hard at discrediting the videos that we saw live , talmabout ‘it was photoshopped’ , so we should believe you rather than our own eyes? So they’d most likely stall or deny justice.

Mr President went on live ( more like a badly edited pre recorded shit but let’s not get into that) and literally threatened protesters without a single word about the lives that have been lost .

How did we get here? Is this our fate till 2023? 3 more years like this ?

I am conflicted whether to give up or keep on but I am tired, my mind is tired , my heart is tired and I haven’t even see quarter of what the older generation has seen. I don’t blame them anymore, where is the justice for the lives that were lost in their time?

I can’t even bring myself to watch news or listen to radio because there are still reports of missing people or will I say dead bodies that were last seen on the protest ground.

May the souls of the people lost to police brutality both from the past years to the recent few days Rest In Peace. You deserved better. Nigeria failed you . May all your respective families and friends be comforted. I hope you are in a better place ❤️.
