A quick blast through the things that will make your novel the best it can be

Writing a novel is tough enough without venturing onto the internet to look for help and advice. There are thousands of results out there if you do a quick Google search and many of these contradict each other. Rather than read scores of articles about how to make your novel the best it can be I have put together some quick pointers here -

1. Write what you want to read. This is the first step that will make your novel the best it can be as you will write from the heart.

2. Don’t be tempted to write for a particular market. This links to point 1, but to reiterate you shouldn’t try to emulate another top-selling book. Be yourself.

3. Plan out what you want to say in advance. Writing blind is a dangerous thing. Know where you want to take your novel.

4. Think about what makes your story different. The top books of today tell a different story, so think about what you have that sets your novel apart. You will need to know this when trying to sell it at the end of the process.

5. Characters are what makes the story. They have to stand on their own but work together too. Sketch out what your characters look like and their characteristics before you put pen to paper. The characters will help to make your novel the best it can be as you write.

6. Dialogue isn’t something that you should shy away from. It can be difficult to get right, but is worth all the effort and editing when you nail it.

7. Stay with it. The best novels are not always written in a matter of weeks or months. If you feel a block with the work then step away from it for a while but never delete what you have produced. It can be revisited, reworked or reformed at a later stage.

8. Editing is vital. This is usually the most important part of your writing. Plan to spend at least as much time editing as you did writing. The results will be worth it.

That’s the core of your novel. This doesn’t cover every minute area of detail when writing a novel, but isn’t intended to either. Keep it simple when trying to make your novel the best it can be and you will be able to write more freely.
