5 Reasons Why Regular Swimmers Have a Healthy Heart

Apart from toning your muscles, here’s what else swimming can do.

2. Improves Breathing
Swimming is nothing less than a cardiovascular sport. It is particularly beneficial for those suffering from asthma and lung disorders. Regular swimming for 30 minutes or more can improve your breathing. When you are constantly exercising your arms and legs under water, your muscles demand more oxygen. The heart starts pumping more blood with each beat and the lungs learns to absorb an increased amount of oxygen. The ribs and diaphragm muscles are strengthened in the process and your breathing gets better.

3. Lowers the Heart Rate
Depending on the physical condition of a person, the heart beats at an average rate of 60–100 beats per minute. When you are under water, this rate gets lowered by 10–15 beats. The hydrostatic effect cools down the body and enhances blood flow. Swimming is effective for both the heart and lungs, and helps use the oxygen more efficiently. It also keeps the heart rate under control and prevents it from increasing to a very high rate.

4. Stabilizes Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is a dangerous condition, particularly because there are no symptoms. It is one of the major reasons for stroke and heart attacks. Men and women who swim at least 150 minutes per week are known to have low systolic blood pressure. It is the most effective form of exercise, which can improve the functioning of the blood vessels and control blood pressure. This helps lower the risk of heart ailments.

5. Reduces Cholesterol
High levels of cholesterol in the blood leads to atherosclerosis, which is a kind of heart disease. Swimming can even out the fat distribution and maintain body weight, which lowers cholesterol. In fact, it works better than walking or running.

Before joining a swimming club, get in touch with your physician to know how much exercise would be best suited for you.
